What is a Nurse Practitioner?
A Nurse Practitioner is a registered nurse (RN) who has completed a higher level of specialized education as well as intensive clinical experience specific to his or her area of practice. Nurse practitioners are equipped to diagnose and treat common medical illnesses or perform routine medical exams previously offered only by physicians. Nurse Practitioners work hand-in-hand with physicians and consult with them when necessary, and can serve as your regular healthcare provider. They can perform exams, prescribe medications and diagnose illnesses much like a physician.
|
Why should I see a Nurse Practitioner?
Nurse Practitioners offer individualized care for patients of all ages. In fact, many people form close medical relationships with their Nurse Practitioners. Nurse Practitioners focus on prevention, wellness and patient education, and can provide you with the tools, medications and knowledge to live your healthiest life. Physicians are trained to treat complex health problems, which may require complicated treatment or surgery. A benefit of Nurse Practitioners is often their accessibility, both with appointments and phone consultations, and his or her personal knowledge of your medical history. Consumer and government studies have shown that Nurse Practitioners are skilled clinicians and patient educators. Moreover, consumers value the Nurse Practitioner’s sensitivity to patient needs and their ability to decrease the mystery surrounding healthcare.

What OB/GYN services does a Nurse Practitioner provide?
Nurse Practitioners perform many of the same services a physician performs in the OB/GYN office, including the treatment of minor illnesses, and will refer you to a physician if a serious health problem is discovered. Your Nurse Practitioner can provide:
- Annual gynecologic Pap tests and other physical exams
- Contraceptive care
- Care before and after menopause
- Screening and referral for health problems
- Health and wellness counseling
- Sexually transmitted disease (STD) screening, treatment, and follow-up
- Pregnancy testing and referral to physicians for prenatal care
- Evaluation and treatment of common infections
Our Nurse Practitioner will take time to answer your questions and address your concerns. Kym Renkoski is also trained to perform urodynamics testing, sonohysterography, intrauterine inseminations, and colposcopy.
